A language development disorder, also called a TOS or language disorder, what is it really? Children with a language disorder:
Learn the mother tongue slowly and with difficulty.
Have difficulty remembering sounds and words.
Have difficulty with grammar.
Find dealing with emotions difficult.
Often have normal/average intelligence.
Often have difficulty with planning.
Hear well (often).
Have difficulty telling a story.
A language development disorder is a neurocognitive developmental disorder. This means that the brain does not process language as well and thus has more difficulty learning a language. The effects of this are different for each child.
So what about ditigal speech therapy for children with language disorders?
Digital speech therapy is also very effective with children with TOS. So how does that work? Within digital speech therapy, there is the opportunity to work interactively. The speech therapist prepares an exercise and shares it with the client. In digital speech therapy, much attention is paid to coming up with a fun activity to accompany the language or speech task. Think of activities like: drawing lines, coloring things in, dragging word cards, dragging story in the right order. Speech therapy should be fun! Looking at the individual abilities and needs of the child, assignments and activities are devised. Furthermore, the offered language can also be supported with gestures or pictos. Experience also shows that children with this problem feel comfortable and safe to do speech therapy from home, a familiar environment. The goal of speech therapy is to make communication fun again!
